He is the author of several books including A Handful of Dust 2015, The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip 2014, Art and Photography 2003, Gasoline 2013, Photography and Cinema 2008, and Walker Evans: the magazine work 2014. He has published over a hundred and fifty essays on subjects as diverse as forensic photography, film stills, photojournalism, surrealism, conceptual art and architectural photography. Recent curatorial projects include Dust (Le Bal, Paris 2015), two shows of the work of Victor Burgin at AmbikaP3 and Richard Saltoun Gallery 2013; and Mark Neville: Deeds Not Words for The Photographers’ Gallery, London 2013.
For his writing, David has received the ICP Infinity Award, the Kraszna-Krausz Book Award, a Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, the Alice Award and the Royal Photographic Society award. He teaches at the University of Westminster, London.
